چکیده
A controlled randomised prospective study has been carried out on 100 male patients to compare the incidence of urethritis following catheterisation with either latex or silicone catheters. All patients underwent elective cardiac surgery and were catheterised for 48 h with antibiotic cover, and were followed up for 6 months post-operatively. Of those with latex catheters 22% developed urethritis, compared with 2% of those in the silicone catheter group. This difference is statistically significant (P < 0.01).Two of the former patients developed a decreased urinary flow and both had tight anterior urethral strictures.

متن کاملA Transgenic Drosophila melanogaster Model To Study Human T-Lymphotropic Virus Oncoprotein Tax-1-Driven Transformation In Vivo.
Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1)-induced adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma is an aggressive malignancy. HTLV-2 is genetically related to HTLV-1 but does not cause any malignant disease. HTLV-1 Tax transactivator (Tax-1) contributes to leukemogenesis via NF-κB. We describe transgenic Drosophila models expressing Tax in the compound eye and plasmatocytes. We demonstrate that Tax-1 but...
متن کاملHTLV-1 and Innate Immunity
Innate immunity plays a critical role in the host response to a viral infection. The innate response has two main functions. First, it triggers effector mechanisms that restrict the infection. Second, it primes development of the adaptive response, which completes the elimination of the pathogen or of infected cells. In vivo, HTLV-1 infects T lymphocytes that participate in adaptive immunity bu...
متن کاملCombination of Arsenic and Interferon-α Inhibits Expression of KSHV Latent Transcripts and Synergistically Improves Survival of Mice with Primary Effusion Lymphomas
BACKGROUND Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is the etiologic agent of primary effusion lymphomas (PEL). PEL cell lines infected with KSHV, but negative for Epstein-Barr virus have a tumorigenic potential in non-obese diabetic/severe combined immunodeficient mice and result in efficient engraftment and formation of malignant ascites with notable abdominal distension, consistent with ...
